If you look at a map of the world, you will notice that most of the planet is covered in water, and the dry areas are like islands between different oceans. In the past, these oceans kept the creatures living in each dry area separate from those in other parts of the world. However, after the invention of ships, these same oceans became highways for accessing other areas of the earth. After the invention of steamships, these vehicles were scattered throughout the oceans and seas, transporting cargo and passengers between different parts of the world. This issue was not limited to steamships, as various types of military vessels, boats, submarines, dinghies, and … also joined the ranks of maritime vehicles. This led to heavy traffic on major maritime routes, creating the conditions for various collisions. Due to limited visibility in the seas at night, many maritime vehicles collided with each other, causing them to sink. To solve this problem, in 1972, a convention was developed that established a set of international rules for maritime transport known as the “International Convention for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea.” According to this convention, every type of maritime vehicle must use a specific type and shape of lights to remotely identify different vehicles and prevent collisions between them. Various laws exist to deal with different types of vehicles, which are valid throughout the world and international waters. Typically, working on ships and similar vehicles requires passing a test of these international laws. Today, we have an application that not only teaches the lights and shapes of different vehicles but also conducts various tests. COLREGs – Lights and shapes of vessels is an application for teaching the lights and shapes of maritime vehicles, specifically for the Android operating system, developed by the software group madeof.blue and available for free on Google Play. This program has a search engine that allows you to search for the shape and type of lights. In addition, the various cards make it easy to learn these lights and shapes. All vehicles are displayed in 3D, and you can view them from different angles. One of the most important features of this program is the ability to take tests and measure your knowledge.
