Her Story is a new and incredibly beautiful adventure and video game from the game development studio Sam Barlow, available for Android devices. It was released hours ago on the Google Play Store for $2.99 and, as always, we have decided to introduce it to you, dear adventure game lovers, for the first time in Iran! The story of this game takes place in 1994, when Hannah Smith, the main character of the game, reports her husband missing to the police. After a while, due to unknown reasons, her husband is found murdered, and this leads to the police interrogating Hannah at specific times! The game puts the gamer in the position of reviewing short videos of Hannah’s interrogations to discover the truth about the issue. Her Story gameplay takes place on an old computer screen, and as a guest user of this computer, the player can search for and review various videos related to Hannah! Of course, the game files are not predetermined, but by searching for keywords (words that Hannah used in interrogations), the player can access new and more videos!
The collection of videos in the archive consists of approximately 270 short videos, each lasting up to 1 minute. The game provides you with the keyword “Murder” to start with, and the rest of the story is up to you. By searching for the keyword “Murder”, 5 video files are found and you must begin your task with them! Since the game’s search system is completely based on the words spoken by Hannah, it is possible that the files found are related to interrogations on specific days and none of them are related to each other. This is where the gamer must search for new keywords based on Hannah’s words and phrases to find more files! Since some keywords are used in a large number of files, the game limits the display of videos related to each keyword to 5, and to watch other files, you must search for more specific keywords over time. Of course, the interesting feature of the game is that you don’t necessarily have to search for specific keywords used in previous videos by Hannah, but you can also guess or write sentences that you think she may have used (such as “Yes, I was there”) to move forward! Of course, it is natural that as you progress further in the game, guessing becomes less useful and you must focus more on the topics mentioned. There are other features that make the gamer’s task somewhat easier; for example, every video that is displayed has a special tag on it so that you can tell if you have seen it before; you can also create a separate archive of videos that you think are important and even place your own specific keywords on each one to make future searches easier! At first glance, the messy nature of the game seems very difficult and illogical, but as you enter it, everything becomes logical and the game’s amazing artistry is well displayed. Every gamer may have different searches than another gamer, which makes the process of creating the story different for each person.
Throughout the game Her Story, Hannah tells the story of two parts of her life, including childhood and adolescence, each of which is related to the other in some way. Some of the events of her childhood are completely related to her experiences in adolescence, while others are only included in the game for the complete narrative. The appeal of the Her Story story is that it always gives you confusing information, and the arrangement of this information is entirely up to you. Sometimes you may come across videos that are almost irrelevant to the whole story or at least seem that way. At other times, you will hear words from Hannah that are completely contradictory to all your knowledge and previous statements. This is exactly the goal that the game’s creator was after and has succeeded in. The basis of the game is such that it forces the gamer to judge an event about which he has no information, and this judgment can be irritating at times. The scattered information in the game makes you always make mistakes. Sometimes you may get angry with Hannah or your heart may burn for her. You may even try to look at her face to see if her words are true or false! The big difference in Her Story is that it doesn’t try to put you in the role of a talented detective; rather, it wants to make you feel smart. The feeling that you have the ability to reach an acceptable conclusion by following clues. It is this feeling of intelligence that makes the gamer always continue the game despite sometimes getting tired or nervous. During the not-so-long gameplay, it often happens that you get lost in the game because you don’t know what to look for, but the game’s story is so captivating and engaging that it is hard to give up on it. The gameplay of the game is not as difficult as it seems, and it only requires the gamer’s special attention.
For greater convenience, there is a type of database system in the game that shows the number of videos watched in the game, and with its help, you can understand what percentage of the interrogation videos you have seen so far. By watching a little more than half of the videos, the game is almost over, and you can be satisfied with the result and get up from it. But if you are a little adventurous, you have the permission to search for other words and videos and put the puzzle pieces together more than ever. The gameplay of the game takes about 2 hours, and if you are looking to find all the videos, you should spend about 6 to 8 hours on it. Most of the gameplay time is related to the final sections and finding the last remaining videos when you are looking for all the truth of the story. Finding the last videos, although it requires a lot of patience and effort, is worth it, and surely by completing the game, you will be very proud of yourself! Although VCR games or “interactive movies” are not classified as a subcategory of the gaming industry by many, it cannot be ignored that Her Story is a game and has a lot to say. Perhaps before this, games have been released that have not been able to separate the cinematic storytelling from an interactive and entertaining game, but Sam Barlow is well acquainted with the boundaries between film and game and has mixed them together excellently. Her Story is certainly not recognized and categorized as a “game” in its traditional sense, but the proper arrangement of game elements and cinematic storytelling elements alongside each other has created a masterpiece of art that leaves no words or speeches for any of the VCR game critics. Her Story can certainly engage any gamer for at least a relatively short period of time!
